Smithers is an attractive mountain town, set against the backdrop of the majestic glacier-topped Hudson Bay Mountain. Because of its alpine environment, the town has adopted an alpine theme. Main Street was reconstructed in 1979 with red brick sidewalks and alpine style rooflines on buildings and shops.
That may be one reason why many European immigrants, attracted by the town's setting and lifestyle, chose to settle in Smithers.
Be sure to pay a visit to the Smithers Art Gallery. Another interesting attraction is Driftwood Canyon Provincial Park, home to one of the world’s most significant fossil beds. The visitors centre offers a map to the park.
The Bulkley Valley Fair, one of British Columbia's largest agricultural exhibitions, takes place in Smithers on the weekend before Labour Day.
