What to do
- Noteworthy
- Worth the detour
- Must see
Stewart is located on the Alaska–British Columbia border. Over the years, this former mining town has gradually been transformed into a charming tourist destination. The area offers a very good chance of seeing grizzly bears in their natural habitat. Wild bears spend the summer months fishing the salmon that are making their way upstream to spawn.
Since you are so close to Alaska, why not drive the extra few minutes to the tiny American village of Hyder? And if you want to follow the time-honoured travellers' tradition, get "Hyderized" at the Glacier Inn by downing a shot of 95% Everclear, an intense experience that will require a designated driver to get you back to Stewart!
Fish Creek
The best place for bear-watching is the Fish Creek Wildlife Observation Site in nearby Hyder (Alaska). The site features a raised viewing platform from which bears can be observed as they fish for chum and pink salmon in the clear shallow waters of Fish Creek. The best time to see grizzlies and black bears in action is in July and August.
Salmon Glacier
Just north of Stewart, on the Canadian side of the border, is a spectacular natural attraction: Salmon Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in Canada. You can drive above this spectacular glacier and admire the view and the sun glittering on the eternal ice and snow. You will feel like you are on top of the world!

Another world
(Translated by Google) Timeless village surrounded by mountains and glaciers (Salmon glacier to do). The weather changes very quickly. Wonderful road to get there. Unfortunately we were too early in the season to see the bears at Fish creek (July 14 to 16). The salmon generally arrive towards the end of July.
A small town with old-fashioned charm!
(Translated by Google) A long road to get there, but it was worth it! The proximity to Hyder allowed us to cross the border 3 times for Fish Creek and the Salmon Glacier. The encounter with the grizzly is undoubtedly the highlight of our trip.
Probably our favorite stop on the trip
(Translated by Google) Very nice stage, worth the detour of several hundred km. We were able to see a Grizzly bear fishing for salmon at Fish Creek, and the Salmon Glacier is very beautiful.
